YouTube Loop

Practise at half speed: slow down and loop

The fastest way to learn a tricky guitar lick, drum fill, dance move or sentence is to loop just that part at a slower speed, then raise the speed little by little. YouTube Loop puts both on one screen.

Try it with an example video

A simple routine

  1. Find the hard part and loop it. The guide on looping part of a video shows how.
  2. Set the speed to 0.5×. YouTube keeps the pitch, so music still sounds in tune.
  3. Play it until it feels easy: several clean repeats in a row.
  4. Move up to 0.75×, then 1×. Only speed up when the slower speed feels comfortable.

Speeds available

The presets and the slider use the speeds YouTube supports, from 0.25× to 2×. Very slow speeds help with fast passages; 1.25× or 1.5× is handy for reviewing a lecture quickly.

Work through a piece section by section

Use the previous and next buttons (or the ← and → keys) to move the loop forward by its own length: a loop from 0:10 to 0:20 becomes 0:20 to 0:30. It is a quick way to go through a song in equal chunks. If the video has chapters in its description, they show up as ready-made sections you can save in one go.

Who it is for

  • Musicians: licks, solos, drum fills and chord changes.
  • Dancers and martial artists: a single move or combination.
  • Language learners: repeat a phrase until you can say it.
  • Students: replay the part of a lecture you missed.
